Chicago Cubs middle infielder Javier Baez is trying to get back to baseball following the death of his 21-year-old sister.
Baez, who was optioned to the Cubs Triple-A affiliate in Iowa to start the season, was allowed a leave of absence on April 8 to rejoin his family.
The 22-year-old is set to travel to the team's training facility in Arizona to take part in extended spring training and will report to Triple-A when he is ready, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN.
Baez is coming off a disappointing first season in the majors, in which he hit .169/.227/.324 with nine home runs and 95 strikeouts in 52 games.
