This is the story the world of baseball never wanted to have happen.

Pittsburgh Pirates racing pierogi Cheese Chester broke his foot while racing around the warning track of PNC Park, and needed to be carted off the field with the assistance of the medical staff.

The stadium staff offered a quick update on Chester, as he was immediately placed on the 15-day DL.

Chester was seen later in the evening on crutches.

The Cheese Chester experience runs the full gamut of emotions. From the exhilarating feeling of dominating the race, to the hubris of turning to taunt, the pain of a broken foot, and the realization of what has happened, which is captured perfectly in the following photo.

It is important to remember that there is a human being inside that costume and that person's pain is no laughing matter. Except, you know, that person is dressed like a pierogi, so it is kind of a laughing matter.

Chester is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks.
