The St. Louis Cardinals selected high-school right-hander Jack Flaherty with the 34th pick of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday, the club's second selection in the first round.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound hurler dominated in his senior season for Harvard-Westlake High School, posting a 0.63 ERA over 12 starts while notching 125 strikeouts over 78 innings. Flaherty, a California native, is committed to the University of North Carolina, and signability remains a legitimate concern for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals received a compensatory pick for losing veteran outfielder Carlos Beltran, who signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent this offseason.
