The baseball world lost a universally loved member of its family Wednesday night, as news broke that baseball lifer Don Zimmer passed away peacefully at 83.
Legendary Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully remembered his late friend Zimmer - who began his career in Brooklyn and moved west to L.A. with the Dodgers - on Wednesday night, during the Dodgers' game against the Chicago White Sox.

The New York Times' obituary of Zimmer, "the stubby, Popeye-muscled baseball lifer with the unforgettable jowls whose passion for the game endured through more than 60 years as a player, manager, coach and adviser," is also worth your time.
Zimmer was married on a baseball diamond in 1951, and it seemed he never left the field.
CBS Sports' Eye on Baseball's Dayn Perry, who has a way with words, put it best:
Not many declarations can be made with full confidence, but this might be one: If Vin Scully remembers you fondly, then you probably lived a full and good life. So it was with Don Zimmer.
"What a game, this baseball," Zimmer said in his book, "The Zen of Zim," in 2004. Indeed.
