1963 - Mantle's walkoff homer nearly leaves Yankee Stadium

Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle, renowned for his prodigious power, blasts what is widely considered the longest home run in the history of Yankee Stadium, crushing a walkoff bomb that strikes the facade atop the right-field bleachers.

"The hardest ball I ever hit," said Mantle, whose Ruthian clout traveled between 500 and 700 feet and lifted the Yankees to an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Athletics.

Mantle's homer produced an audible "boom" when it struck the facade, according to teammate Joe Pepitone, and spectators maintain the ball was still rising when it hit the facade and nearly left the stadium altogether.
