The Philadelphia Phillies signed reliever Chad Gaudin to a minor league contract Tuesday with an invitation to spring training.
Gaudin posted some of the best numbers of his 11-year career last season with the San Francisco Giants. The 30-year-old begin last season in the bullpen, but ended up starting 12 games to finish the year, before being shut down in August with carpel tunnel syndrome.
2013 | IP | ERA | WHIP | SO/BB |
---|---|---|---|---|
As a starter | 66.1 | 3.53 | 1.25 | 60/26 |
As a reliever | 30.2 | 2.05 | 1.23 | 28/14 |
The right-hander was almost unhitable against right-handed hitters in 2013, where they batted .193/.249/.312 while striking out 61.
Gaudin addresses several areas for the Phillies as he could slide into the back end of the rotation or sure up a bullpen that ranked 27th least season in ERA.
