The Yankees officially cut ties with veteran outfielder Vernon Wells on Wednesday, releasing the 35-year-old six days after removing him from the 40-man roster.
Wells, who is set to earn $21 million this season, was rendered expendable by the club's offseason additions of Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran. The highly-paid outfielder was designated for assignment last week to accommodate veteran left-hander Matt Thornton, who signed a two-year, $7-million deal with the Yankees earlier this offseason.
A three-time All-Star, Wells hit just .233/.282/.349 with 11 home runs over 130 games last season, posting the tenth-lowest wRC+ (70) among players with at least 400 plate appearances.
