The Associated Press ·

BALTIMORE (AP) — Colson Montgomery and Junior Perez homered during Chicago’s seven-run third inning and the White Sox pounded the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 on Tuesday night.

Erick Fedde (3-6) allowed three runs in five innings for Chicago, which extended its lead atop the AL Central to two games over Cleveland. Tyler Schweitzer worked the final four innings for his first career save.

Orioles starter Trey Gibson (1-3) yielded eight runs, seven hits and six walks in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

Chicago went 13-12 in June, making this the first time the White Sox have managed back-to-back winning months since 2021. They had a winning record in every month that year.

RANGERS 4, GUARDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jacob deGrom pitched seven strong innings and Texas took advantage of a bone-headed play by Cleveland rookie outfielder Cooper Ingle to beat the Guardians and extend their winning streak to six games.

DeGrom (7-5) allowed a two-run homer to Kyle Manzardo in the first before turning dominant. The right-hander gave up a leadoff single in the second before retiring 18 of the next 19 batters, improving to 4-0 in June.

Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer and Josh Jung added a solo shot as the AL West-leading Rangers improved to 7-2 on their road trip.

They got a big assist in the seventh inning when Ingle, making just his second major league start in the outfield, lost track of the number of outs and tossed a live ball into the stands, allowing the Rangers to take a 3-2 lead.

PHILLIES 8, PIRATES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cristopher Sánchez returned to form after a couple of shaky outings, allowing only three hits in seven innings as Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh.

Sánchez (10-3) struck out nine and walked only two in becoming the first pitcher this season to reach 10 wins.

Sánchez was supported by rookie Justin Crawford’s two-run single in the second inning, then a three-run seventh inning outburst that included an RBI double by Trea Turner and RBI single by Bryce Harper.

Pittsburgh starter Bubba Chandler (3-8) pitched well into the seventh inning, but couldn’t escape the Philadelphia rally. Early on, he was undone only by No. 9 hitter Crawford.

The Phillies loaded the bases with two outs in the second, and after fouling off several Chandler pitches, Crawford took another late swipe and managed to hit one down the third base line off the end of the bat. It went for a two-run single that was all that Sánchez needed.

TIGERS 9, YANKEES 3

NEW YORK (AP) — Tarik Skubal pitched six innings of one-hit ball and Riley Greene hit two of Detroit’s four homers off Cam Schlittler as the Tigers beat the Yankees and sent New York to its season-worst sixth straight loss.

The Tigers hit five homers overall against the Yankees for the first time since Aug. 30, 2018.

Skubal (4-4), making his fourth start since returning from elbow surgery, allowed only Ben Rice’s 23rd homer in the first inning and an unearned run in the sixth. The two-time defending AL Cy Young Award winner struck out nine and walked none after allowing four runs to the Yankees last week in Detroit.

Skubal threw 61 of 87 pitches for strikes and retired 12 straight after Rice’s homer in the first.

METS 3, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) — Nolan McLean and three relievers combined on a six-hitter, Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens both hit solo home runs and New York beat Toronto.

Brooks Raley pitched the seventh, Luke Weaver worked the eighth and Devin Williams finished for his 12th save in 13 chances.

The Mets posted their fourth shutout and won for the second time in five games since Andy Green took over as interim manager when Carlos Mendoza was fired last Friday.

With their second win in 11 games, the Mets (36-50) avoided falling 16 games below .500. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the most games under .500 for a team that reached the postseason was 16 by the 1914 Boston Braves (12-28).

The Mets are 19-10 when they hit two or more home runs.

The Blue Jays have lost seven of eight. The shutout loss was their fourth.

NATIONALS 8, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) — Cade Civalli gave up one hit in seven innings and had a career-high 13 strikeouts in Washingtons’ victory over the Red Sox, snapping Boston’s five-game winning streak.

Civalli, who was at the center of a scuffle in the fourth inning, yelled at Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras after striking him out, causing the benches to clear. Contreras, along with Red Sox interim manager Chris Tracy, teammate Nate Eaton and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas, were all ejected.

Civalli (5-4) threw 100 pitches and gave up one unearned run in the first inning, when third baseman Curtis Mead bobbled Contreras’ grounder, allowing Anthony Seigler to score.

James Wood hit an RBI single to tie the game in the fifth. He had an RBI double in the eighth for the eighth run of the game.

CARDINALS 5, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) — Nathan Church hit a three-run homer, Nelson Velázquez added a solo shot and Matthew Liberatore threw five strong innings as St. Louis beat NL East-leading Atlanta.

Velázquez started a four-run fourth inning with his third homer of the year — a 444-foot shot to center field that tied the game at 1. Church followed later in the inning with his sixth homer of the season, a three-run shot, to increase the lead to 4-1.

Liberatore (4-5) struck out nine and allowed one run on one hit. Coming into the game, Liberatore had a 10.34 ERA in the month of June. Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned his 21st save of the season.

Jordan capped the scoring for St. Louis with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Masyn Winn in the top of the sixth.

Martín Pérez (6-5) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings for Atlanta.

RAYS 10, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Junior Caminero homered for the fifth straight game, a three-run shot that highlighted a six-run second inning, and Tampa Bay rolled from there to a victory over Kansas City.

Caminero, the reigning AL player of the week, announced earlier in the day that he would participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby after finishing second to the Mariners’ Cal Raleigh last year. Then, the 22-year-old third baseman crushed a pitch from Noah Cameron over the left-field wall for his 23rd homer of the season and the eighth in his last seven games.

Ryan Vilade added a homer of his own on the very next pitch, giving Tampa Bay hitters 13 of them in their last five games. Nick Fortes also drove in a pair of runs while Jonathan Aranda had an RBI single and reached base four times.

Rays starter Griffin Jax (4-5) allowed a leadoff homer to Carter Jensen and a two-run shot to Bobby Witt Jr., but still made it through six innings. The right-hander struck out five without a walk to beat the Royals for the second time in a week.

With Houston facing a three-run deficit after three innings, Cam Smith and Taylor Trammell singled in the fourth. With runners at the corners, Yainer Diaz hit an RBI single. Raynel Delgato walked, loading the bases. Jose Altuve challenged his strikeout call with a full count. The call was overturned and another run scored. Alvarez then hit his 26th home run of the season to right-center field.

Astros starter Mike Burrows (4-8) pitched five innings. He gave up six hits and four earned runs, striking out three and walking two. Josh Hader struck out two in the ninth inning and picked up his eighth save.

MARLINS 14, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) — Javier Sanoja and Owen Caissie each hit three-run homers, and Joe Mack added a two-run shot as Miami defeated Colorado to claim their franchise-best 20th win of June.

The Marlins, who have the second-lowest payroll in MLB, have outscored opponents 133-80 in June, their best calendar month in franchise history. They are also the first team in MLB to win 20 games in a month this year.

Sanoja broke the game open in the third with his 419-foot shot to left-center field to extend Miami’s lead to 5-1. The Marlins then rattled off a three-run sixth inning behind RBI singles from Kyle Stowers, Griffin Conine and Xavier Edwards before Mack launched his fifth-career homer to right field in the seventh.

Caissie sent his 10th home run of the season 453 feet over the right-field wall in the eighth, and Stowers capped the scoring with a two-run double in the ninth. The Marlins set new season highs in runs and hits.

DODGERS 9, ATHLETICS 3

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Tommy Edman had four hits including his first home run of the season, and Dave Roberts became the fastest manager in history to reach 1,000 career wins after Los Angeles beat the Athletics.

Miguel Rojas also homered to help the Dodgers to their fourth straight victory and seventh in eight games. Edman had four RBIs while Mookie Betts added three hits.

Edman, who missed the first 73 games of the season recovering from right ankle surgery, crushed a first-pitch slider from A’s starter Jeffrey Springs for a three-run homer in the third inning. Edman also had a hit in the fifth then added an RBI single in the seventh.

Roberts became the 69th manager in history to reach 1,000 wins and the quickest to do it. Roberts achieved his milestone managerial victory in 1,606 games. Cap Anson, the next fastest, needed 1,641 games and won his 1,000th in 1893.

DIAMONDBACKS 8, GIANTS 2

PHOENIX (AP) — Ketel Marte homered in his fourth straight game, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added a three-run homer and Arizona extended their dominance against San Francisco with a win.

The D-backs are 8-0 against the Giants this season, winning five times in Arizona and three times in San Francisco.

Gurriel’s three-run homer in the first was his second long ball of the season and barely cleared the fence in left center. It came one pitch after he successfully challenged a strike call that was subsequently changed to a ball.

Jorge Barrosa walked with the bases loaded and Marte added a two-run single in the third to push the lead to 6-0. Marte hit a 431-foot solo homer in the sixth, becoming one of 11 big leaguers to homer in at least four straight games this year.

MARINERS 8, ANGELS 3

SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodriguez had three hits and scored twice, Bryan Woo took a shutout into the seventh inning and Seattle put together a five-run sixth to beat Los Angeles.

Rodriguez and Colt Emerson both had three of Seattle’s 13 hits. Randy Arozarena and Cole Young scored two runs apiece.

Woo (7-6) allowed just four hits and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings. The Angels’ first two runs in their three-run seventh were charged to him after he gave way to reliever Eduard Bazardo. That ended Woo’s streak of home shutout innings at 32 1/3, which stretched over a span of five games dating to May 6 against Atlanta.

Michael Rucker pitched a scoreless eighth for the Mariners, and Andres Munoz set L.A. down in order in the ninth.
