García's 2 home runs lift Nationals to a victory over Orioles

The Associated Press ·

BALTIMORE (AP) — Luis García Jr. homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

Pete Alonso and Jackson Holliday each hit a two-run homer for the Orioles, but after Zack Littell (7-6) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings, a maligned Washington bullpen held on. PJ Poulin worked two hitless innings for his third save.

Alonso hit a 437-foot home run in the first and Kyle Bradish (5-8) retired the first eight Washington hitters. But the right-hander walked five of the next 11 men he faced before being pulled. The Nationals managed just one hit off him in four-plus innings, but he allowed four runs, three earned.

The Nationals took the lead with three runs in the third, all with two out. After Bradish walked both Keibert Ruiz and James Wood, García doubled them both home. Then Curtis Mead hit a routine grounder to Coby Mayo at third, and Mayo threw wildly for an error that allowed another run to score.

PIRATES 9, REDS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ryan O’Hearn homered twice in a game for the third time in the majors and drove in four runs to help Pittsburgh avoid a series sweep with a win over Cincinnati.

O’Hearn put Pittsburgh in front 5-4 in the fifth inning with a 421-foot drive to right off Brady Singer (3-7).

After 65-minute rain delay with one out in the bottom of the eighth, Pierce Johnson walked Bryan Reynolds and Nick Gonzales before O’Hearn hit a three-run shot to make it 8-4. Esmerlyn Valdéz followed O’Hearn by homering for a third straight game.

Mitch Keller (6-5) went six innings for the Pirates, allowing four runs — three earned — and five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

RANGERS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) — Pinch-runner Jarred Kelenic scored the tiebreaking run by racing home from second base on a wild pitch in the ninth inning, and Texas beat Toronto to complete a four-game sweep.

Josh Jung hit a two-out double off Louis Varland (3-3) in the ninth and Kelenic came in to run.

Varland’s first pitch to Corey Seager bounced in front of the plate and ricocheted off Alejandro Kirk’s mitt. The catcher initially couldn’t find the ball, allowing Kelenic to come all the way around with the decisive run.

Cole Winn (3-2) pitched two innings for the win and Tyler Alexander finished for his fourth save in five chances.

Texas has homered in a season-best 11 consecutive games.

Toronto was swept for the third time this year and has lost six straight games overall

ASTROS 7, TIGERS 5, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) — Christian Walker’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run 10th inning as Houston rallied to beat Detroit.

Tigers closer Kenley Jansen (1-4), pitching his second inning, started the 10th by walking Yordan Alvarez. Isaac Paredes, who tied it in the eighth with a solo home run, singled to give Houston a 4-3 lead. Walker then hit Jansen’s 2-2 cutter for a long homer to left to make it 7-3.

Spencer Torkelson homered off Enyel De Los Santos with one out in the 10th to get Detroit within 7-5. Zach McKinstry followed with a single and rookie Ben Malgeri drew a two-out walk to bring the winning run to the plate.

Matt Vierling lined out to the warning track to right to end the game.

GUARDIANS 6, MARINERS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rhys Hoskins had a two-run double down the left-field line during a five-run eighth inning and Cleveland rallied for a victory over Seattle.

The Guardians trailed 4-1 before their comeback. It is their third victory in 36 games in which they have trailed after seven innings.

Chase DeLauter, who was activated from the injured list before the game, had two hits and two RBIs.

Victor Robles had two hits and three stolen bases for Seattle, which scored more than three runs for the first time in 14 games. The right fielder is the first Seattle player since Dylan Moore in 2024 to have three stolen bases in a game.

Cleveland sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth. Brayan Rocchio led off the inning with a hit and scored on Daniel Schneemann’s single up the middle off Michael Rucker (0-1).

RAYS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Junior Caminero homered in a career-best fourth consecutive game, Drew Rasmussen threw six shutout innings and Tampa Bay finished a sweep of Arizona with a victory.

Cedric Mullins and Ben Williamson added solo home runs for Tampa Bay, which has won five consecutive games and went 7-3 on its homestand. The series sweep was the eighth of the season by the Rays.

Caminero has six home runs in during his four-game homer streak – including three against Kansas City on Thursday — and has seven in his last six games overall. A 463-foot shot to left-center field in the fifth inning on Sunday put Tampa Bay in front 4-0.

Rasmussen (7-4) allowed three hits, struck out five and hit two batters to finish June allowing a total of three runs allowed over 33 innings in five starts. Craig Kimbrel, Garrett Cleavinger and Trevor Martin combined to allow one run and two hits in relief.

Merrill Kelly (5-8) allowed five runs and eight hits for Arizona, which has lost six of eight. Ketel Marte hit a solo home run in the eighth to end the Rays’ shutout bid.

PHILLIES 5, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyle Schwarber became the first major leaguer to reach 30 homers this season with a two-run shot in the seventh inning that sent Philadelphia to a win over the New York Mets.

The Phillies squandered an early 3-0 lead and fell behind 4-3 before Schwarber hit a 408-foot drive to center field off Kodai Senga (0-7), who was making the first regular-season relief appearance of his big league career.

Schwarber connected in Philadelphia’s 84th game — the fastest anyone has reached 30 homers in franchise history. He has six straight 30-homer seasons, the longest active streak in the majors, and eight overall — most among active players.

Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh all had third-inning RBIs for the Phillies.

Kyle Backhus (1-0) got the final two outs in the sixth. Jhoan Duran threw a hitless ninth for his 21st save.

TWINS 3, ROCKIES 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Connor Prielipp struck out a career-high 10 in six innings, Ryan Kreidler hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh and Minnesota edged Colorado.

Prielipp allowed two runs and six hits before being relieved by Andrew Morris (4-2), who struck out two in 1 1/3 hitless innings to earn the win. Yoendrys Gómez worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning on four pitches for his eighth save.

Kody Clemens also homered, Brooks Lee had two singles and Royce Lewis and Trevor Larnach each doubled for Minnesota, which had eight hits overall. The Twins only struck out once: Byron Buxton went down looking in the eighth inning.

The Rockies struck first on TJ Rumfield’s first-inning RBI single, but the Twins answered after Lewis scored on a throwing error in the second.

Clemens gave Minnesota the lead with his 399-foot solo shot to right, getting ahold of a low inside fastball from Ryan Feltner.

ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Carter Jensen extended his franchise-record rookie hitting streak to 19 games and five Kansas City relievers held the Chicago White Sox scoreless for five innings to end a four-game losing streak with a win.

Jensen went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to extend the longest active streak in MLB, now the longest by an American League rookie since 2014.

The Royals (35-50) were outscored 24-2 in the first two games of the series but avoided their seventh sweep of the season.

Miguel Vargas homered and doubled for the White Sox (43-39), who fell to 17-10 in one-run games.

After starter Luinder Avila gave up four runs in four innings, Royals relievers Steven Cruz (2-2), Beck Way, Lucas Erceg, Matt Strahm and Alex Lange combined to allow only two baserunners over the final five, with Lange pitching a perfect ninth for his seventh save. The Royals have an MLB-high 22 blown-lead losses this season.

Jensen’s RBI single scored Lane Thomas in the top of the first to extend his streak. The White Sox answered in the bottom of the inning on Vargas’ 19th home run, a two-run shot 407 feet into the wind to left.

CUBS 4, BREWERS 3

MILWUAKEE (AP) — Seiya Suzuki singled in two runs to key a three-run 10th inning and Jordan Wicks, called up earlier Sunday, got a game-ending double play with the bases loaded to preserve Chicago's victory over Milwaukee in the decider of the three-game series.

Joel Kuhnel (1-3) relieved to open the 10th. Automatic runner Justin Dean advanced to third on a ground out. Pete Crow-Armstrong was walked intentionally with two outs and stole second. Alex Bregman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Michael Busch walked to force in the go-ahead run and Suzuki followed with a two-run single to left.

Ethan Roberts relieved in the bottom half and Christian Yelich opened with an RBI single, taking second on the throw home. Jackson Chourio walked and Brice Turang singled to load the bases with no outs.

Wicks, called up earlier Sunday from Triple-A, relieved and walked pinch-hitter Garrett Mitchell to make it 4-3. Jake Bauers flied out in foul territory, and Gary Sanchez bounced to third to start the double play.

Jacob Webb (3-2) got the win with a scoreless ninth. Wicks notched his first save of the season.

CARDINALS 2, MARLINS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Bryan Torres hit a two-run homer to back Kyle Leahy’s stingy start as St. Louis cooled off Miami Marlins with a victory that snapped a four-game skid.

Masyn Winn led off the second inning with a single against Tyler Phillips (1-3) and Torres followed with his third home run for a 2-0 lead.

Leahy (6-4) didn’t allow a hit until Owen Caissie and Graham Paulie had back-to-back doubles to begin the fifth, cutting it to 2-1. Leahy allowed one run on two hits with three walks in five innings.

JoJo Romero got four outs and Ryne Stanek induced an inning-ending double play in the seventh. George Soriano struck out two in a perfect eighth and Riley O’Brien retired the side in order in the ninth for his 20th save in 24 opportunities.

Phillips set down 12 in a row following Torres’ homer until JJ Wetherholt led off the sixth with a single. Iván Herrera grounded into a double play four pitches later and Alec Burleson bounced out to end the inning.

Burleson’s 25-game on-base streak ended and Herrera’s 22-game run was also stopped.

ANGELS 4, ATHLETICS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Josh Lowe’s first career grand slam was all the offense Los Angeles needed in a victory over the Athletics.

Lowe was 10 for 33 with 27 RBIs with the bases loaded during his six-year career, but had only managed two extra-base hits in those situations prior to going deep off starter Aaron Civale in the second inning.

The center fielder fouled off a pair of 1-2 pitches before sending a high cutter 403 feet to the right-field corner for his first homer since May 20.

Angels starter Sam Aldegheri (3-3) allowed one run and five hits in five innings, striking out four. José Fermin threw two scoreless innings and Samy Natera Jr. got four outs for his first major league save.

GIANTS 3, BRAVES 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Robbie Ray outpitched Chris Sale in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners and San Francisco held off Atlanta.

Ray allowed just four hits and an unearned run in eight innings. Caleb Kilian entered with a 3-1 lead in the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to Matt Chapman, who scored after two groundouts.

Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith singled off the glove of shortstop Casey Schmitt and pinch-runner Jorge Mateo stole second, but Kilian struck out former Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski swinging for his sixth save.

With a pair of outstanding pitching performances, San Francisco (35-48) won the last two games of the three-game series against the slumping Braves (49-33), who have dropped six of seven and 12 of 16.

They lead the NL East by three games over surging Philadelphia.

DODGERS 4, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Freddie Freeman drew a tiebreaking, bases-loaded walk off suddenly wild Michael King in the fifth inning and Mookie Betts followed with a two-run single for Los Angeles, who beat San Diego to take two of three.

The two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers, who have baseball’s best record at 54-30, extended their lead to 10 games over the Padres in the NL West.

The teams will meet again Thursday through Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Manny Machado homered off Emmet Sheehan with one out in the fourth to tie it at 1. It was Machado’s 15th of the season.

King, who allowed Shohei Ohtani’s opposite-field RBI single to left with one out in the third, got into trouble immediately in the fifth when he issued a leadoff walk to Alex Freeland. He got Chuckie Robinson to line out but allowed the next four batters to reach.

Ohtani walked and Andy Pages was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Freeman fouled off three straight pitches before walking on the ninth pitch to bring in Freeland. Betts singled to center to bring in Ohtani and Pages for a 4-1 lead and chase King.
