Orioles' Elias working to fix team 'as rapidly as I can'
Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Tuesday that he's doing everything he can to improve the slumping club's prospects moving forward.
The Orioles enter Tuesday's action in the basement of the AL East with a 15-31 record. They've lost seven straight games for the first time since the 2021 season.
"I'm working to fix this as rapidly as I can, and I'm in a position where regardless of how it affects me or my personal situation, I have to make decisions that I judge, in collaboration with my bosses … to be in the best interest of the Baltimore Orioles," Elias said, according to The Baltimore Banner's Andy Kostka.
The Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on May 17 after starting the 2025 campaign with a 15-28 record. Their struggles follow consecutive postseason appearances and an AL East crown in 2023. They were subsequently swept in both trips to the playoffs.
"I have had a lot of success, I believe, in my career, and I think that we did a really strong job in building up the franchise," Elias said, according to Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun. "This is deeply disappointing to me, and I'm doing everything in my power to correct and improve it."
Elias has taken criticism for failing to adequately replace last season's ace, Corbin Burnes, after the right-hander signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Orioles added veterans Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano, and Kyle Gibson to try and replace some of Burnes' production.
Gibson was released Tuesday after an 0-3 record with a 16.78 ERA in four starts. Morton, meanwhile, is 0-7 with a 7.68 ERA and was moved out of the starting rotation.
Sugano has been one of the few bright spots for Baltimore, leading the team's starters with a 3.08 ERA in 52 2/3 innings (nine starts).
