Red Sox hurler Houck 'lost' after allowing 11 runs vs. Tigers
Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck is searching for answers after a miserable outing against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
Houck was torched at Comerica Park, allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits with three walks and zero strikeouts across 2 1/3 innings. The rough start ballooned Houck's season ERA to 8.04.
"Probably the most lost I've ever been," Houck said postgame, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo. "I'm just not getting the job done, which weighs on me heavily."
Houck is the first pitcher in MLB history to allow 11-plus runs in a start of fewer than three innings pitched twice in the same season. He also permitted 11 runs in a road start against the Tampa Bay Rays in April.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora was non-committal about Houck making his next scheduled start.
"We'll talk about it, of course ... I've got to take a look at the video, and we've got to see what we're gonna do," Cora said. "Right now, it's too fresh. It's too quick. We have to take a look at it and see if it's mechanical, usage, or where we're at."
Houck had a breakout season in 2024, setting new personal bests in ERA (3.12), innings pitched (178 2/3), and fWAR (3.9) en route to making his first career All-Star Game.
