Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos was left disappointed after a rough outing in the club's Opening Day loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
Berríos allowed six runs on nine hits, including three home runs, and struck out five across five innings in Toronto's 12-2 loss.
"Today, I wasn't executing my pitches," Berríos said postgame, per Sportsnet. "I tried, but I didn't. And also, they had a good day in the box. Like a leader I am, I failed today."
Berríos has struggled in three Opening Day starts with the Blue Jays, registering a 9.53 ERA and 2.03 WHIP.
The Orioles set a franchise record for Opening Day with six home runs in the win. Adley Rutschman and Cedric Mullins both went deep twice.
"You've gotta pitch inside to this team," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said, according to MLB.com. "(Berríos) got in a little, but, I think it was just mistakes."
The Blue Jays will turn to right-hander Kevin Gausman as they look to win their first game of the season when the two clubs resume their series Friday night at Rogers Centre.
