Red Sox DFA Hill after 4 appearances
The Boston Red Sox announced Friday they designated veteran left-hander Rich Hill for assignment.
Right-hander Luis Guerrero was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.
"Tough one," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. "He's going to be a Red Sox for life, but I think it's smart for us to start getting guys here who can contribute now and in the future."
Hill, 44, signed a minor-league contract for his fourth stint with the Red Sox on Aug. 18. He posted a 4.91 ERA with five strikeouts across 3 2/3 innings.
Hill struggled to find the strike zone in his last outing Wednesday, walking a pair of batters while recording just one out in a loss to the New York Mets.
Guerrero owns a 5-3 record with a 3.31 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season. The 24-year-old will look to help boost a Red Sox bullpen that ranks 26th in ERA.
