The Houston Astros signed veteran outfielder Jason Heyward to a major-league contract.
The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Heyward for assignment Aug. 22 and released him Aug. 26.
The 35-year-old will provide the Astros with more depth in the outfield as the club continues to wait for Kyle Tucker to return from the injured list. Tucker has been sidelined since June 3 after fouling a ball off his shin.
The Astros are currently deploying an outfield of Jake Meyers in center, Ben Gamel in right, and Mauricio Dubón in left field.
Heyward struggled this season after returning to the Dodgers on a one-year, $9-million contract. He hit .208 with six home runs, 28 RBIs, and .682 OPS in 63 games.
