General manager Brian Cashman says the New York Yankees' decision to end their pursuit of Jack Flaherty was due to an inability to match value with the Detroit Tigers.
"I think Jack Flaherty is an exceptional starter, and I had difficulty matching up with the Tigers on (him)," he told SNY.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had no such issue Tuesday and acquired the right-hander from the Tigers for two prospects.
After the dust settled on the trade deadline, reports suggested the Yankees had a deal in place for Flaherty before ultimately backing out due to medical-related concerns.
"Unfortunately, you get a lot of different reports going out there," Cashman said. "At the end of the day, I would have brought Jack Flaherty in if I could have matched up - I had difficulty matching up and that's the reason I don't have him."
Flaherty is enjoying a resurgent campaign, posting a 2.95 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 133 strikeouts across 18 starts.
The 28-year-old is slated for free agency at season's end.
