Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced Wednesday that closer Jordan Romano underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair an impingement in his right elbow, per Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
Romano will not pick up a baseball for at least six weeks, a timeline that puts a return to game action this season in doubt.
Toronto originally placed Romano on the IL with a sore right elbow on June 1. The 31-year-old has since suffered multiple setbacks and was most recently shut down on June 29 with continued pain.
Romano, an All-Star in 2022 and 2023, has pitched to an uncharacteristic 6.59 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 13 2/3 innings this season.
