The New York Mets are giving Jeff McNeil a break out of the lineup as a reset amid a tough start to the season at the plate.
McNeil didn't start any of New York's three games in a sweep of the Washington Nationals and hasn't made an appearance since Sunday.
"Yeah, it’s mental (too)," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday, per Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post. "It gives him an opportunity to continue to work on the things he needs to be working on, which he is."
McNeil appeared in 55 of the Mets' first 56 games but struggled to the tune of a .227/.296/.320 slash line with three home runs, 10 doubles, and 14 RBIs across 203 at-bats.
The 32-year-old won the NL batting title with a .326 average in 2022. The Mets signed McNeil to a four-year, $50-million contract extension with a fifth-year club option in January 2023.
The Mets will open up a two-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies in London, England on Saturday.
