Blue Jays option struggling Swanson to Triple-A

The Toronto Blue Jays optioned struggling reliever Erik Swanson to Triple-A Buffalo, the club announced Tuesday.

Right-hander Chad Green was reinstated from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding roster move.

Swanson struggled this season, owning a 9.22 ERA with 6.59 K/9 across 13 2/3 innings. He struggled to keep the ball in the park, allowing five home runs after only permitting eight in 66 2/3 innings last season.

"The decision is just about performance," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Tuesday, per MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. "He's obviously not happy, but we need him back."

The Blue Jays acquired Swanson and pitching prospect Adam Macko from the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Teoscar Hernández in November 2022. The 30-year-old emerged as a trusted setup man in 2023, posting a 2.97 ERA with 75 strikeouts over 69 appearances.

Swanson missed the beginning of the regular season after dealing with a forearm issue in spring training.

Green has been sidelined since late April with a right teres major muscle strain. The 33-year-old registered a 2.35 ERA in seven appearances before going on the injured list.
