The New York Mets rallied to walk off the Detroit Tigers 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday, snapping their five-game losing streak to start the season.

First baseman Pete Alonso crushed a game-tying solo home run in the ninth inning to tie the game at one. Alonso became the fastest player in franchise history to reach 500 RBIs. He accomplished the feat in 690 games, breaking David Wright's previous mark of 727 games.

Outfielder Tyrone Taylor singled home Brett Baty three batters after Alonso's home run to deliver the winning hit for the Mets.

"We definitely needed that one," Alonso said, according to Dan Martin of the New York Post.

The Mets dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-3. New York was held hitless into the eighth inning of the second game before outfielder Harrison Bader blooped a single to left field. The 13-inning hitless streak across the two games was the longest in Mets history, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

"I know how hard they were trying," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, per Martin. "It's not the homestand we were anticipating, but there's a lot of baseball left. We'll get it going."

The Tigers are now no longer undefeated, dropping to 5-1 on the young campaign.
