Soto: Yankees signing Snell would be 'unbelievable'

Juan Soto is on board with the New York Yankees' reported connection to star free agent and reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell.

"It would be unbelievable to have two Cy Young winners going back-to-back; it'd be great," Soto told Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

"(Snell's) a great guy, a great player. Any help that we can get I would love."

Soto and Snell spent parts of two seasons as teammates with the San Diego Padres. The Yankees reportedly have an offer on the table for Snell.

"I know if he's coming over, he's going to help the team big-time," Soto said. "It's always great to have great talent on the team. I would never say no. So it's a great fit for him, I think."

The Yankees signed Marcus Stroman to a two-year contract earlier this offseason and were also connected to Yoshinobu Yamamoto before he ultimately landed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said last week that he wouldn't rule out more additions this offseason as the club continues to look at ways to improve.

Soto said he believes Snell is being patient and trying to secure the best contract and fit.

"I think he's just waiting for the perfect spot for him," Soto said. "It is what it is. It happened before with (Manny) Machado and with (Bryce) Harper. Those guys signed late, in spring training. They were asking for the money, and they got it."

The Yankees are currently projected to have the third-highest payroll at $307 million and are at the highest luxury-tax threshold. As a result, New York would face a tax penalty of 110% on each additional dollar spent.

Snell posted a 14-9 record with a 2.25 ERA and 234 strikeouts across 180 innings to win his second career Cy Young.
