It appears any contract extension talks between Paul Goldschmidt and the St. Louis Cardinals will have to wait until after the start of the 2024 season.

"I think right now, I think everybody just wants to see how this season starts," Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Saturday, according to MLB.com's Jeff Jones. "You know, obviously, we want to get off on the right track, and then we can address things like that."

Goldschmidt is entering the final season of a five-year, $130-million contract he inked with the Cardinals in 2019.

The 36-year-old regressed somewhat in 2023 after winning NL MVP in 2022, slashing .268/.363/.447 with 25 home runs and 80 RBIs over 154 games.

The Cardinals are looking to rebound in 2024 after struggling to a 71-91 record last season. St. Louis failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2018 and posted its first losing record since 2007.
