The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres exchanged names on players in trade discussions centered around All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, sources told SNY's Andy Martino.

The two sides are not close to an agreement, as San Diego's initial asking price was very high, Martino reports.

Soto is eligible for arbitration for the final time this offseason. He's scheduled to hit free agency at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign. The 25-year-old is projected to earn $33 million next season, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

The Yankees and Padres reportedly engaged in preliminary trade discussions for Soto in October.

Soto registered a .930 OPS with 35 home runs, 97 runs scored, and 109 RBIs across 162 games for the Padres in 2023. The three-time All-Star has been one of baseball's best hitters since debuting in 2018. He owns a career 154 wRC+ with 160 home runs and 483 RBIs in 779 games.
