The Miami Marlins are acquiring infielder Jake Burger from the Chicago White Sox for left-handed pitching prospect Jake Eder, the clubs announced Tuesday.
The Marlins also shipped infielder Jean Segura and infield prospect Kahlil Watson to the Cleveland Guardians for first baseman Josh Bell, the Guardians announced Tuesday. Cleveland will release Segura before he reports to the club.
Burger is putting together a breakout season. The 27-year-old has a career-high 25 home runs and 52 RBIs across 88 games for Chicago in 2023.
The White Sox selected Burger with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft. The slugger isn't arbitration-eligible until 2026.
Burger will look to bolster a Marlins offense that ranks 28th in MLB in home runs and 26th in runs scored.
Eder was the Marlins' No. 4-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. The 24-year-old posted a 2-1 record with a 3.94 ERA and 38 strikeouts across 29 2/3 innings at Double-A this season.
Bell was in his first season with the Guardians after signing a two-year, $33-million contract. The 30-year-old struggled to the tune of a .701 OPS with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs across 97 games this season.
The Marlins signed Segura to a two-year, $17-million contract in the offseason. The 33-year-old has struggled at the plate this season, hitting just .219 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 85 games.
Watson was the Marlins' No. 11-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. The 20-year-old posted a .727 OPS with nine home runs and 24 RBIs across two minor-league levels this season.
