The New York Yankees designated outfielder Aaron Hicks for assignment, the club announced Saturday.
New York also signed outfielder Greg Allen to a major-league contract and selected him to the active roster.
The 33-year-old Hicks has struggled this season, hitting .188 with one home run and a 49 wRC+ across 76 plate appearances.
"It is what it is," Hicks told Greg Joyce of the New York Post. "It's part of the business side of it. Just got to move on to the next chapter."
The Yankees acquired Hicks in a trade with the Minnesota Twins in 2015. His best season came in 2018 when he hit 27 home runs, scored 90 runs, and stole 11 bases in a career-high 137 games.
New York inked Hicks to an eight-year, $70-million contract extension in 2019. But the veteran has failed to deliver over the past few seasons, posting a wRC+ of 76 and 90 in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
"This is a very good baseball team," Hicks said. "It kind of seemed like it wasn't working out for me. Obviously, with the decision they decided to make, maybe somewhere else might be a little bit better."
Hicks saw his playing time reduced in the early portion of the 2023 season, as manager Aaron Boone favored Oswaldo Cabrera.
