MLB Monday best bets: Angels to shine vs. Athletics

ANAHEIM, CA - APRIL 08: Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) meets Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout (27) at the plate after Trouts home run during the MLB game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on April 8, 2023 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Anaheim, CA.

It's a relatively busy Monday in MLB, as we have 11 games on the schedule. Let's take a look at a few of the best ways to attack them.

Athletics (+170) @ Angels (-200)

The Athletics have been a consistent target through the first few weeks of the season and have shown nothing to pause for thought.

They own a 4-18 record and are fully deserving of it. They aren't scoring any runs and have allowed more than eight per game. On average, they're getting outscored by more than 4.5 runs on a daily basis. Let that sink in for a moment.

I don't see the grass getting any greener for them Monday against the Angels. Ken Waldichuk will be taking the mound against a team that absolutely mashes left-handed pitching.

The Angels own a .359 wOBA against lefties this season. Only the Cardinals, Rays, and Braves have posted better splits than the Angels.

They're causing all lefties a world of problems. They should be chomping at the bit for a chance to hit Waldichuk, who has struggled immensely thus far.

He owns a 7.65 ERA and 7.92 FIP through 20 innings of work. He's giving up a lot of homers, a lot of walks, and being hit all around the park.

The last time he faced the Angels, he allowed nine hits and six earned runs, including three homers. There's no reason to expect much better this time around.

Although Jose Suarez hasn't pitched all that well this season, this is the perfect opportunity to get back on track. The Athletics haven't been able to generate runs and lack power versus lefties, ranking 25th in both ISO and hard-hit rate.

If Suarez can keep their offense relatively in check, he should get more than enough run support to earn a lead through five innings.

Bet: Angels F5 -0.5 (-140)

Rafael Devers over 1.5 total bases (+105)

Devers hasn't done a great job of getting on base this season - at least by his standards - but he sure has hit for a lot of power. Through 22 games, he has already hit eight home runs and seven doubles, good for 15 extra-base hits.

He has the ability to go over his total base number with one good swing on any given day.

The stars are aligning for a big evening Monday night in Baltimore. He'll face off against Orioles starter Dean Kremer, who hasn't pitched well.

He owns a 6.54 FIP, which ranks him third from last among the day's projected starters. Kremer has induced soft contact only 13% of the time and is struggling to keep the ball down.

That's not ideal when going against a bat like Devers. He possesses a lot of power, as mentioned, and feasts on right-handed pitching.

Last season, he posted a .392 wOBA and .252 ISO over 452 plate appearances against right-handed pitching. Those are remarkably strong numbers.

Expect him to make some noise at the dish against a struggling righty.

Ryan Mountcastle over 1.5 total bases (+135)

I like Baltimore's chances of making some noise at the plate as well and believe Mountcastle is a prime target to be in the mix.

Mountcastle is hitting .321 against LHP this season with four homers. He's also generated hard contact 45.8% of the time.

I think Chris Sale is going to have a very difficult time slowing him down. Sale owns a 5.60 FIP thus far and has struggled to keep the ball in the park.

With the amount of power Mountcastle possesses, he's perhaps the leading candidate on the Orioles to take advantage of Sale's shortcomings.
