The San Diego Padres and veteran left-hander Cole Hamels are in agreement on a minor-league contract, a source told FanSided's Robert Murray.
The pact will pay Hamels $2 million if he's on the major-league roster, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Hamels' addition comes on the heels of San Diego's agreement with right-hander Michael Wacha on a one-year deal with multiple options.
Hamels hasn't appeared in a game since he made one start for the Atlanta Braves during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. The 39-year-old signed a one-year, $18-million contract with the Braves but was limited by a shoulder injury.
Hamels will look to provide depth to a Padres rotation featuring Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove, and Wacha. Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo are also potential options for manager Bob Melvin.
Hamels is a four-time All-Star and won World Series MVP as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008. The southpaw owns a lifetime 163-122 record with a 3.43 ERA and 2,560 strikeouts across 423 appearances.
