The Miami Marlins and veteran right-handed starter Johnny Cueto have agreed to a one-year, $8.5-million contract that includes a team option for 2024, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The deal will pay Cueto $6 million in 2023, and the team option for next season is worth $10.5 million with a $2.5-million buyout, according to Craig Mish of MLB Network.
Cueto, 36, played for the Chicago White Sox last year and authored a 3.35 ERA and 3.79 FIP over 158 1/3 innings.
The Marlins will mark Cueto's fifth team as he enters his 16th season. The two-time All-Star possesses a 3.44 ERA over 355 games.
Cueto joins a rotation led by NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara as well as Pablo Lopez, Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers, and Edward Cabrera. There have been reports throughout the winter that the Marlins are shopping starting depth in exchange for an impact bat, including Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds and Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas.
