With rosters expanding for September, the New York Yankees selected the contract of speedy infielder Oswald Peraza.

Peraza ranks 53rd among all prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. The shortstop places third in the Yankees' system behind fellow infielder Anthony Volpe and outfielder Jasson Dominguez.

The 22-year-old is known for his defensive abilities and speed. Peraza's expected to stick at shortstop at the big-league level and has stolen 33 bases at Triple-A this campaign while being caught five times.

Active rosters expand in the regular season's final month from 26 to 28. Players must be included on the 40-man roster before September - which Peraza was - to be eligible for postseason play.

The Yankees rank 18th in MLB at shortstop defense, according to FanGraphs, and have 13 errors at the position. Isiah Kiner-Falefa has been responsible for 12 of them, while Marwin Gonzalez, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Gleyber Torres have also appeared at shortstop this season.

New York reinstated Gonzalez from the paternity list to push its active roster to 28.

The first-place Yankees are coming off a dismal August, going 10-18 to record their worst single month since the 1991 season when they lost 91 contests and finished last. Their once huge lead on the AL East has shrunk to six games over the Tampa Bay Rays, who New York opens a three-game series against on Friday. The Yankees also hold an eight-game lead on the third-place Toronto Blue Jays.
