The Miami Marlins were dealt a big blow Thursday as the club announced that right-hander Max Meyer will undergo Tommy John surgery.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform Meyer's surgery in the near future, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. The usual recovery time for the procedure is 12-18 months.
Marlins manager Don Mattingly said the decision to undergo surgery came after Meyer met with a number of doctors, according to the Miami Herald's Jordan McPherson.
Meyer left his second career MLB start July 23 with soreness in his elbow after throwing just 10 pitches.
The 23-year-old also missed a month of action earlier this season with right ulnar nerve irritation.
Meyer is ranked No. 2 in the Marlins' system and is baseball's 20th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com.
