The Cincinnati Reds traded veteran catcher Sandy Leon to the Cleveland Guardians for cash considerations, the teams announced Tuesday.
The Guardians play a doubleheader Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins and will be without catcher Austin Hedges, who just landed on the seven-day injured list due to a concussion. The club also designated right-hander Ian Gibaut for assignment while recalling righty Anthony Castro and southpaw Konnor Pilkington.
This will be Leon's second stint with Cleveland after he spent the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign with the club. He was also a non-roster invitee this past spring.
The 33-year-old never made a professional appearance for the Reds, playing the entire 2022 season so far in Triple-A. He hit .222/.321/.306 with one homer and seven RBIs over 26 games with Louisville.
Leon last played in the majors for the Miami Marlins, appearing in 25 games last year while posting a .539 OPS.
