The San Diego Padres brought back Robinson Cano on a minor-league contract, the team announced Friday.
Cano was granted free agency after the Padres optioned the veteran second baseman to the minors in early June. He played 11 games with the Friars, going 3-for-33 with one walk and one RBI.
Outfielder Nomar Mazara was given Cano's roster spot and has gone 5-for-15 with one double and two strikeouts.
Earlier this season, the New York Mets designated Cano for assignment with approximately $40 million remaining on his contract.
The 39-year-old once seemed earmarked for the Hall of Fame, but a pair of suspensions related to performance-enhancing drugs tarnished his reputation and prevented him from playing for one-and-a-half seasons.
Over 2,258 career games, Cano has posted an .840 OPS and accrued 58.7 WAR, according to FanGraphs.
