Veteran right-hander Johnny Cueto agreed to join the Chicago White Sox on a minor-league deal, reports The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Cueto will start in Triple-A, and the contract includes opt outs if he's not promoted to the majors by certain dates, Rosenthal adds.
The contract is worth $4.2 million, prorated for days spent with the White Sox, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Cueto spent the past six seasons with the San Francisco Giants. He pitched 114.2 innings in 2021, authoring a 7-7 record along with a 4.08 ERA and 4.05 FIP. The 36-year-old is a two-time All-Star and won the 2015 World Series with the Kansas City Royals.
The White Sox needed insurance on the mound after recently losing Lance Lynn for four weeks to a knee injury. The reigning AL Central champs still boast a quality rotation featuring Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease, Dallas Keuchel, and Michael Kopech.
Chicago opens its regular season on Friday against the Detroit Tigers.
