The New York Yankees acquired catcher Jose Trevino from the Texas Rangers on Saturday for right-hander Albert Abreu and left-hander Robert Ahlstrom.

Trevino gives the Yankees additional depth behind Kyle Higashioka. Recently acquired catcher Ben Rortvedt is expected to start the season on the injured list with a strained oblique.

The 29-year-old Trevino spent his entire four-year MLB career with the Rangers, hitting .245/.270/.364 with nine home runs, 31 doubles, and 100 strikeouts over 156 games. He appeared in a career-high 89 games last season, hitting five homers to go with a .607 OPS.

Abreu threw just 38 innings in the majors over two seasons but is out of minor-league options. He posted a 5.15 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 35 strikeouts over 28 relief appearances in 2021. He did, however, strike out 31 over 16 2/3 innings in Triple-A last season.

Ahlstrom was the Yankees' seventh-round pick in the 2021 draft. The 22-year-old had a 2.80 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts over 90 innings in his final year at Oregon.
