The Cincinnati Reds traded outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners for pitchers Justin Dunn and Brandon Williamson and outfielder Jake Fraley, the teams announced Monday.
Winker, 28, enjoyed a breakout 2021 campaign, becoming an All-Star for the first time while hitting .305/.394/.556 with 24 homers and 71 RBIs over 110 games. The slugger posted career highs in a myriad of categories, including AVG, SLG, OPS, homers, and doubles.
The 30-year-old Suarez struggled last year, hitting .198/.286/.428 with 31 homers in 145 games while attempting to learn a new position at shortstop. The typical third baseman and former All-Star possesses an .800 OPS for his career.
Winker is under team control for two more seasons via arbitration, while Suarez is owed at least $35.9 million over the next three years with a $15-million team option for 2025.
Dunn leads the package of players going the other way. The 26-year-old right-hander was once a highly touted prospect in the Mariners' system. Now, the former first-round pick owns a 3.94 ERA and 5.61 FIP in 25 starts across three major-league seasons.
The 26-year-old Fraley will also likely play in the majors for the Reds this year. The lefty outfielder has hit .196/.320/.336 with nine homers and 12 steals over 97 career MLB games across three seasons.
Williamson is the only true prospect included in the deal, ranking seventh in the Mariners' system at the time of the trade, according to MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old posted a 3.39 ERA in 19 starts over two minor-league levels last year, earning a promotion to Double-A.
The Reds are in the midst of a fire sale, also sending Sonny Gray to the Minnesota Twins over the weekend.
