The Chicago Cubs and shortstop Andrelton Simmons have agreed on a one-year, $4-million contract, according to The New York Post's Joel Sherman.
The four-time Gold Glove winner is one of the best defensive shortstops in the league and could help offset some of what Javier Baez provided in the field before the Cubs traded him to the New York Mets at the 2021 deadline.
Simmons spent last season with the Minnesota Twins, hitting .223/.283/.274 with three home runs and 31 RBIs in 131 games. Despite struggling at the plate, Simmons excelled with his glove, finishing fourth among all major-league shortstops in outs above average, according to Statcast.
The 32-year-old is a 10-year veteran, making stops with the Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta Braves, and Twins. Simmons owns a lifetime .265/.313/.369 slash line with 70 home runs and 437 RBIs in 1,191 career games.
