It came down to the season's final day, but the Seattle Mariners extended their MLB-worst playoff drought to two decades Sunday.

Seattle came agonizingly close this year to reaching the postseason, needing a victory over the Los Angeles Angels and either a Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees loss to guarantee an extra contest for a chance to play a wild-card game. The Mariners lost 7-3 to the Angels, while both the Yankees and Red Sox won.

The Mariners end the season with a 90-72 record, their best mark since winning 93 contests in 2003 when they finished two games back of the wild-card spot.

The Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals franchise holds the record for the longest playoff drought in MLB history, spanning 30 years between 1982-2011.

Seattle currently owns the longest active playoff drought of any team in the major North American sports leagues. The NBA's Sacramento Kings are next with 15 straight seasons outside the playoffs.
