The Pittsburgh Pirates traded left-hander Austin Davis to the Boston Red Sox for infielder Michael Chavis, the team announced Friday.

Chavis, 25, was a highly touted prospect in Boston's system after being selected 26th overall in the 2014 MLB Draft. But he's struggled at the plate in the majors, hitting .190/.207/.342 with two home runs in 31 games this season.

He'll look to replenish his value on the rebuilding Pirates and he isn't slated to hit free agency until 2026.

Davis, 28, has allowed six earned runs in 9 2/3 innings of work with the Pirates this season. He'll likely serve as a left-handed depth option in Boston's bullpen.
