The Toronto Blue Jays placed right-hander Alek Manoah on the 10-day injured list with a right back contusion, the team announced Monday.

Manager Charlie Montoyo said the young ace sustained the injury when he slipped on the rain-soaked dugout steps at Sahlen Field, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.

The Blue Jays had Manoah slated to start Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. The team recalled Thomas Hatch to take his spot, and the 26-year-old could start the second contest of a pivotal three-game set versus the Red Sox.

Manoah, who began the season in Triple-A as one of Toronto's top prospects, owns a 2.90 ERA over his first eight major-league starts. The 23-year-old has settled in behind Hyun Jin Ryu and Robbie Ray as the No. 3 starter in the rotation.

In other moves, the Blue Jays placed reliever Anthony Castro on the 10-day IL with right ulnar nerve irritation and recalled outfielder Jonathan Davis from the minors.

Toronto trails Boston by six games for the AL East lead and enters the first game of its final home series in Buffalo on Monday.
