Phillies place Nola, 3 other players on COVID-related IL

The Philadelphia Phillies placed right-hander Aaron Nola, third baseman Alec Bohm, reliever Connor Brogdon, and left-hander Bailey Falter on the COVID-related IL, the team announced Sunday.

Philadelphia recalled Damon Jones, Mauricio Llovera, Nick Maton, and Cristopher Sanchez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in corresponding moves.

Bohm tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss at least 10 days, manager Joe Girardi said, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Nola, Brogdon, and Falter are all in protocols and their status is unclear.

"You're going to have little things like this pop up probably more than teams that are vaccinated," Girardi said, according to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"You just pray that they're either a false positive or the guys that are nearby don't get it. But in the meantime, sometimes you have to lose players that don't necessarily have it, and that's the frustrating part."

When asked if this incident would change the minds of unvaccinated players and staff, Girardi said it probably wasn't enough to move the needle.

"I doubt it," he said. "Because I think it's their beliefs, which is OK. People's beliefs are their beliefs. We all have the ability to have our own beliefs."

The Phillies are one of a few MLB teams that haven't reached the 85% vaccination threshold for players and other on-field personnel, according to Gelb.

Nola was previously scheduled to start against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Reliever Brandon Kintzler opened the game instead.
