The Chicago White Sox have designated Adam Eaton for assignment and reinstated Adam Engel from the injured list, the team announced Wednesday.

Eaton, who signed a one-year, $8-million deal with Chicago this past winter, has hit .201/.298/.344 with five homers and two steals over 58 games played. The 32-year-old will earn $7 million in base salary plus a $1-million buyout for his 2022 team option worth $8.5 million.

Engel has been held to 10 games this year and is coming off of the 10-day IL following a right hamstring strain. The 29-year-old has hit .282/.328/.496 with six homers and two stolen bases in 46 games played over the past two seasons.

The first-place White Sox hold a commanding 6 1/2-game lead over the Cleveland Indians. Chicago's outfield ranks 11th in FanGraphs WAR despite currently missing Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert.
