The Miami Marlins have offered center fielder Starling Marte a multi-year contract extension, sources told Jordan McPherson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald.

Marte is in the final season of a six-year, $31-million contract, and he's reportedly seeking a three- or four-year deal in the $50-millon range. The veteran has previously expressed his desire to stay in Miami beyond the 2021 campaign.

The financial terms of the offer are still unclear, but the organization is reportedly aiming for a deal to be in place prior to the July 30 trade deadline. However, Marte will likely be traded before the deadline if the parties fail to reach an agreement, sources told McPherson and Mish.

Miami could choose to keep Marte and receive a compensatory draft pick if he leaves as a free agent this coming offseason.

The 32-year-old, whom the Marlins acquired just ahead of the trade deadline last season, is enjoying a career year at the plate over 46 games while slashing .296/.403/.456 with a team-leading .859 OPS and 13 stolen bases.
