Baltimore Orioles first baseman/designated hitter Chris Davis is expected to miss the entire 2021 season following arthroscopic surgery to repair the labrum in his left hip, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.
General manager Mike Elias said Davis originally tried to rehab the injury but ultimately decided on the season-ending surgery, per Kubatko. The Orioles reportedly believe he'll be ready for 2022 spring training.
Next season will mark the final campaign of a seven-year, $161-million contract Davis signed in January 2016. However, Davis will still receive $42 million in deferred salary through 2037.
The 35-year-old hasn't appeared in a game this season due to the injury, and he hasn't been consistently productive for some time. He hit .249 with a solid .858 OPS, 197 home runs, and 496 RBIs in 743 games over his first five seasons with the Orioles.
Then, from 2017-20, Davis hit .185 with 54 home runs in 377 contests. Those numbers paled in comparison to his 2013 All-Star season when he slashed .286/.370/.634 with 53 home runs in 160 games while finishing third in AL MVP voting.
