Major League Baseball suspended Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado for three games for his altercation with New York Mets outfielder Dom Smith during Friday's contest, the league announced.

The left-hander was supposed to begin his ban Sunday, but he's appealing the decision.

Benches cleared in the eighth inning of Friday's game when Alvarado taunted Smith after striking him out.

Smith and Mets reliever Miguel Castro were both fined undisclosed amounts for their involvement in the incident.
