Free-agent outfielder Yasiel Puig has signed a deal to play for Veracruz of the Mexican League, Enrique Rojas of ESPN reports.

Puig tried to latch on with a major-league club this winter but didn't secure a contract despite reported interest from the likes of the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Astros.

The seven-year veteran last played in MLB in 2019 when he split time between the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. He hit .267/.327/458 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs in 149 games.

Puig recently appeared in five games for Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League. He went 3-for-13 with seven walks in 20 plate appearances.

A former All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Puig had a deal in place with the Atlanta Braves last summer but it fell through after he tested positive for COVID-19.
