The Pittsburgh Pirates placed third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist strain, the team announced Sunday.
Hayes left Saturday's game with wrist discomfort after sustaining the injury during an at-bat against Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta. X-rays came back negative but inflammation has made it difficult for Hayes to wear his glove, according to Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic.
He was originally listed as day-to-day before the club elected to place Hayes on the IL.
The 24-year-old is widely seen as one of the majors' top rookies and was considered a front-runner for the NL Rookie of the Year award. He maintained rookie eligibility after appearing in 24 games in 2020, where he hit .376/.442/.682 with five homers and 11 RBIs across 95 plate appearances.
Hayes was 1-for-5 with a home run and a pair of walks in his first two games this year before the wrist injury.
The Pirates selected infielder Wilmer Difo's contract and designated reliever Tyler Bashlor for assignment in corresponding moves.
