The Cincinnati Reds are in discussions with utility man Jonathan Villar regarding a minor-league deal, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The 29-year-old split the 2020 campaign between the Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays, making appearances at second base, shortstop, and center field.

Villar hit .232/.301/.292 in 52 games played last year, equating to a 66 wRC+ - 34 points below the league average - with two homers and 16 stolen bases.

In 2019, Villar was more effective as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, posting a .792 OPS and 109 wRC+ while accruing 4.1 WAR, according to FanGraphs.

Currently, the Reds have Kyle Farmer as their presumptive shortstop after losing Freddy Galvis to the Orioles via free agency this winter. Meanwhile, Mike Moustakas is playing second base but has been a factor in the rumor mill throughout the offseason.
