Wainwright, 39, has spent his entire 15-year MLB career with the Cardinals. A three-time All-Star, he's also finished in the top three in NL Cy Young voting on four different occasions.
Last season, Wainwright went 5-3 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 10 starts while throwing two complete games.
It wasn't always a foregone conclusion that Wainwright would return for another year in St. Louis. The Atlanta Braves reportedly showed interest in the veteran right-hander early in the offseason. Additionally, the San Diego Padres made Wainwright an offer before they acquired Joe Musgrove, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
Wainwright will slot back into the Cardinals' rotation, which is projected to include ace Jack Flaherty, Carlos Martinez, Kwang Hyun Kim, and Miles Mikolas.
It remains to be seen if Wainwright will reunite with longtime batterymate Yadier Molina, who's still a free agent.
Kolten Wong celebrated the signing with a bit of a playful jab at his former club after the Cardinals declined his option in October.
Happy for you @UncleCharlie50 at least the cardinals made one good move 😂 #don’tforgetyadi
