The Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and Oakland Athletics have all been involved in contract negotiations with shortstop Marcus Semien, sources told Jim Bowden of The Athletic.

With All-Star Xander Bogaerts entrenched at short, the Red Sox would likely be looking to move Semien to second base if he signed in Boston.

Semien was listed as one of the Reds' potential targets in late November as the club looks to upgrade at shortstop.

Likewise, the A's were openly looking to retain their longtime infielder, who's spent six seasons with Oakland.

Semien had a down year in 2020 when he hit .223 with seven home runs in 53 games. But that followed a career-best campaign in 2019, which saw him slash .285/.369/.522 with 33 home runs and 92 RBIs. He also played in all 162 contests and finished third in AL MVP voting.
