The San Diego Padres want to keep Fernando Tatis Jr. for the long term.
The two sides are working on an extension that, if completed, will be for around 10 years, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
While it's unclear how far along discussions are right now, the Padres are willing to go to $300 million, a source told Jessica Kleinschmidt of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Additionally, the Padres hope to get a deal in place before the New York Mets are able to extend newly acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor, according to Kleinschmidt.
Padres GM A.J. Preller recently said the club's plan is to sign the budding superstar to an extension before the 2021 season begins.
Tatis, 22, has hit .301/.374/.582 with 39 home runs, 98 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases over 143 games during his first two major-league seasons. He finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 and fourth in NL MVP voting this past campaign.
