Didi doesn't expect Yankees reunion: 'Gleyber is the future at shortstop'

Shortstop Didi Gregorius will be a free agent this winter after his one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies expires.

However, the 30-year-old does not anticipate a reunion with the New York Yankees, where he spent five seasons of his career. Gregorius doesn't think the club needs him for one simple reason: Gleyber Torres.

"I think Gleyber is the future at shortstop," he said on "Moose and Maggie" on WFAN.

Even though Torres struggled during the abbreviated 2020 season - he slashed .243/.356/.368 with three home runs while also committing nine errors in the field - Gregorius doesn't think it's indicative of Torres' ability.

"It's just one year and to my understanding was he was hurt, too, for some of it. Once you get hurt it gets like a setback on everything. If he gets next year and is fully prepared, he's ready to go ... he will be fine."

Gregorius should have plenty of suitors on the open market even if the Yankees aren't one of them; the Los Angeles Angels are interested in the lefty-hitting shortstop as a possible replacement for the outgoing Andrelton Simmons, according to George A. King III of the New York Post.

Gregorius hit .284/.339/.488 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in his potentially lone season with the Phillies. He also appeared in all 60 games, which is a huge indication he's healthy after missing nearly half of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
